Flight 93's ACARS Data - "A Question of Interpretation?"
By Mark Conlon.
In the analysis below it shows how 'Pilots for 9/11 Truth' may have misinterpreted the 'Flight 93' ACARS data after it "allegedly" crashed at 10:03am in Shanksville. Source link file here: (1369kB PDF) that has been released under the 'Freedom of Information Act' and it contains details of the ACARS messages to and from flights AAL11, UAL93 and AAL77.
'Pilots for 9/11 Truth' asserts the ACARS data demonstrates that the aircraft "received" messages through ground stations located in Harrisburg, PA, and then later routed through a ground station in Pittsburgh, 20 minutes after the aircraft UA175 had "allegedly" impacted the South Tower in New York.
In the screen-shot below of the file shows the ACARS message, ID 0658. In the printout which 'Pilots for 9/11 Truth' have been working from and referenced as message #14 in the Michael J. Winter interview with the FBI, 'Pilots for 9/11 Truth' has asserted it was transmitted from the TOL RGS station. See below where highlights have been added.
In the screen-shot above there are 3 blocks of information separated by blank lines. In the first line of each block there is a word which I have highlighted in red indicating the type of data in the block.
The first block has the type ULMSG which is an ACARS message as received from the airline to be transmitted to the aircraft. The second block has the type ULBLK which is an ACARS message as transmitted to the aircraft. The third block has the type DLBLK which is an ACARS message as received from the aircraft.
In the first block we can see TOL which I have highlighted in blue which 'Pilots for 9/11 Truth' has asserted is the RGS station through which the ACARS message was transmitted to the aircraft.
In the second and third blocks we can see PIT which I have highlighted in green and is the actual RGS station through which the ACARS message was transmitted to the aircraft in the second block and an ACARS message from the aircraft acknowledging receipt of the ACARS message from the airline was received from the aircraft in the third block.
Therefore despite the testimony of Ed Ballinger and Michael J. Winter, we can see that although the ACARS message from the airline was supposed to be transmitted through the TOL RGS station, it was actually transmitted through the PIT RGS station.
Also the file shows that there are no type DLBLK blocks and therefore no ACARS messages received from UAL93 after the "official" time of the crash. Here is what Warren Stutt's understands:
Messages with the code:
• "ULMSG" are from airline to ARINC, to be routed via a target radio station (Target Stn) which could be the wrong one; it's probably determined by airline from flight plan
• "ULBLK" are messages from ground station to plane - the actual ground station sending is in the tag "Stn="
• "DLBLK" are messages from plane to ground station (downlink). The actual receiving station is in the tag "BepStnName="
Time stamps are in Universal Time, which was ET +4h. So a stamp of "20010911 13:47:31" translates to 9:47:31ET.
Some stations can be looked up here:
Some stations that I saw in the ACARS log:
BWI=Baltimore
CAK=Akron (Ohio)
CLE=Cleveland
CRW= Charleston (West Virginia)
CVG=Cincinnati
DTW=Detroit
EWR=Newark, NJ
FWA=Fort Wayne (Indiana)
HTS=? (I am guessing Huntington, West Virginia)
IAD=Washington (Dulles)
LGA=New York City (La Guardia)
ORF=Norfolk, VA
PIT=Pittsburgh
SYR=Syracuse (NY)
TOL=Toledo (Ohio)
YYZ=Toronto
The last DLBLK message from UA93 was received at 10:01:57/59ET by ground stations Pittsburgh (ca. 80 miles from Shanksville) and Washington-Dulles (ca. 150 miles from Shanksville).
After the crash time, there are no more DLBLK messages, only uplinks.
Rob Balsamo at 'Pilots for 9/11 Truth' doubts Warren's expertise, and his interpretation of "BepStnName=" tags for DLBLK messages, and mockingly points out that a DLBLL was received from UA93 at 09:47:31ET by ground stations in Detroit, Dulles and Toronto. The message was also received by Pittsburgh and HTS (Huntington, WV?). Warren Stutt - http://warrenstutt.com/index.html
Rob seems to think this is not possible. However, at the time the plane had turned near Cleveland and was somewhere near the Ohio-Pennsylvania-West Virginia state borders, heading east towards Pittsburgh. That location was approx.
• 200 miles from Detroit
• 250 miles from Toronto
• 250 miles from Washington
• 50 miles from Pittsburgh
• 200 miles from Huntington
All within reasonable range for planes at altitude. At the time, UA93 was still at about 19,000 feet (5700m). At this altitude, the horizon is about 170 miles away.
Reading through the log file, it becomes clear that Warren Stutt's interpretation of station names for downlinks are spot-on: Early in the flight, the acronyms for airports in New York feature heavily, later in the flight, Ohio takes over, and always there are occasional messages picked up by locations near the horizon, such as Baltimore, Buffalo, Norfolk, Toronto, Cincinnati, Huntington.
Also, following the target stations of ULMSG messages, we see where UA93 was supposed to fly.
Conclusion:
The ACARS message log nicely corroborates the hypothesis that UA93 flew from Newark out west and was diverted near Cleveland around 9:35am, flew back east towards Pennsylvania. This also supports the other evidence of Air Traffic Control's (ATC) last coordinance positioning of UA93's location placing it 15 miles past the "official" crash site.
Also Linda Justice on the ATC recording saying UA93 is flashing over Hagerstown.
Plus, we have evidence from the 'Flight Aware' system showing a screen-shot confirming that UA93 landed at Reagan National Airport at 10:28am.
Thanks for reading, and caring!
